A haunting blast from the past

wicked wives of PhiladelphiaIt has been said that history has a way of repeating itself. The behavior of today’s society is hauntingly reminiscent of times gone by–the disposal of people who unknowingly annoy. Apparently love is for the dogs. Human can’t seem to be bothered. In fact many people openly prefer the company of an animal to people. Look at all the animal rights activists who will come out and protest when they hear an animal has been abused or neglected.

Where are these people when they see humans openly abuse and neglect other humans? Where are they when they know a friend of acquaintance has committed a crime against someone else?

They are quiet.

…I finally finished the book, the Wicked Wives by Gus Pelagatti. I must confess that I never knew ‘little old Philadelphia’ had crime that rivaled New York. The Wicked Wives is based on a true 1938 murder scandal. As a kid Mr. Pelagatti had a ringside seat, the murder scene was only a few doors down from where he lived. He made a vow to himself that when he became a man he would investigate and learn all the juicy details the grown ups whispered to themselves. I am thankful to him for keeping the promise.

Wickedness descended farther into the abyss.

Like any criminal ring, the participants pool their resources to ensure that their goals are ultimately accomplished. Some criminals will only allow themselves to descend but so far into the abyss. Thugs, thieves and drug dealers are examples of people with a criminal element who will only themselves to fall but so far into the abyss. They commit crimes that if convicted will cost them a minimum of incarcerated time–less than five years.

The Philadelphia Poison Ring was a criminal ring composed of cousins Herman and Paul Petrillo, Morris Bolber. At first their criminal activity focused on counterfeiting, escalating into insurance scam, finally culminating into murder. Unfortunately the victims only crime was to be married to callous spouses who utilized the talents of the Petrillos. Thankfully there is a God above who stopped these people in their tracks. This book is a good read. The Petrillos had plenty of help–the majority of which came through the transfer of the almighty dollar. In the end, they were convicted of killing 114 people.

Get the book and learn who was their biggest partner in crime. I never saw the hand stirring the pot behind the scenes.

Homecomings

Homecomings are always filled with anxiety. Homecomings represent the reconnection of ties (family and friends) that are somewhat severed by distance of space and time.

Madeleine Fitch moved away to become a bestselling crime mystery novelist. She kept up with the news from her hometown of Harbour Falls by way of her Dad, the town’s mayor. The juiciest tidbit he told her was Chelsea Hannigan disappeared. Chelsea was a local woman scheduled to be married the next day. The disappearance made national headlines because it was Maddy’s hometown. Everywhere she went people pressed her for details on the case, but Maddy declined to comment.

Four years later, curiosity gets the best of her. She had to admit to herself that the story is intriguing and would make a pretty good mystery book. So she goes back home to Harbour Falls and investigate.

The first person to pique her interest was Chelsea’s groom to be, Adam Ward. Adam is quite a man, extremely attractive and independently successful due to his development of software for many high profile corporations. Adam awakens Maddy’s suppressed sexuality. However, Maddy cannot forget that Adam was and still is the primary suspect in Chelsea’s disappearance.

When you are young and in love you tend to overlook the obvious. But as you age life seasons you. You are not so blind and you come to the realization that anyone is capable of anything at any given time. Even those you least expect. S. R. Grey does a superb job of maintaining the sexual tension between Maddy and Adam. The couple is rapidly falling in love, yet Chelsea’s disappearance and Maddy’s genuine mistrust of Adam are the catalysts that keep them apart.

What really happened to Chelsea? Was Adam responsible? Does Maddy’s little lie keep her and Adam apart? Will they ride off into the sunset together or separately?

I’m not telling! Get Harbour Falls and learn the truth for yourself.

Lauren James comes to this realization when her only sibling, Max calls her unexpectedly. Their phone call is rudely interrupted by screams of torture, unfamiliar voices with accents, and then the sudden demand for money.  Unwilling to let her brother die, Lauren fulfills the request.

A serious situation such as this requires more than one person. Jaden Dean enters the story. Jaden is not your typical man. He is a government employee assigned to tasks that fly under the radar, which is what Lauren needs. Someone to get results, protect her, and ultimately love her. Of course Lauren is a bit hard-headed and does not easily trust strangers and Jaden has not had a serious relationship in what seems like decades.

Its something about teetering on the brink of life and death that seems to awaken the will to live.  A good writer challenges their characters to mirror life. They too must overcome life’s obstacles to prevail. Ms. Han let Lauren and Jaden know that Cupid was throwing them an arrow. She also let them know that storms are the perfect excuse to have a romp in the sack. That is why this book was Olivia’s Cup of Tea.
